Your laptop is only the I/O device. I haven't set-up wireless networks but have done a hardwired one and assisted my oldest when he set up his wireless network.
Two pieces of info I acquired:
1) Read the manual many times. I know my hardwired router's manual was 80+ pages long, only 15 pages of less which applied to my situation. Worse yet, these 15 pages were scattered in three different spots within the 80+ page manual. Reading the manual multiple times, and flagging the short sections that applied to me, made the job go easy once I started.
2) You must enter the security data of your connected device (computer) first when setting up your wireless network. My son made the mistake of entering the data for his desktop first while using his laptop as the input device. Everything came to a screeching halt after the first stroke of the "Enter" key. The solution was to finish the set-up using the now authorized desktop, but it took a few minutes, and panicked phone calls to me, to realize what his problem and error was.
As you said, re-start with a clear head and things should go fine.
