I don't know where you getyour information, EGD, but I suspect it's from a tainted source. The planet is in rather rough shape: Cities have "bad air" days where it's unhealthy to do any activity outside; Fish caught in the middle of the ocean are unhealthy to eat; Rain is acidic enough that those of us in the "fallout" areas have to do special things when detailing our cars; tens of thousands of animal and plant species - perhaps the very ones that could help cure difficult diseases - have become extinct over the last 40 years.
If that's "doing better than it was 40 years ago", you and I have a very different interpretation. I'll grant you one point of improvement: the global effort to reduce CFC use (by the "alarmists" some folks rail agaisnt) has had outstanding success in reducing the ozone hole we created.
