A cross bike is compromise. It'll do both but neither very well. Look for a lower end used or new road bike. I say lower end because that's all you'll need if you don't ride much. If you really get into biking, you'll buy a much nicer, better fitting road bike. That way you won't be taking a beating buying the wrong bike to start.
Put the fattest tires on your Motobecane that you can find so you can ride the dirt roads and trails. And, at some point if you really like mountain biking, you'll get a good one of those, too. See, once you start road riding a lot, your leg strength will make the mountain biking even more fun.
