James: First, thanks for the FAQ. It explains a lot.
I have a "Remote 1" with a key and fob integrated, fob containing unlock function for the doors/trunk and assumedly the actual transponder for the security interlock. My actual goal is to remove the key blank itself from the transponder/remote piece so as to have two units - a blank key like the old "wallet" key they used to provide (pre-1999) and a separate remote that contains the transponder. When done, the combination would give you a wallet key and a circa 1997 type "remote" unit.
Questions:
1. Can the key "blank" (the metal part... already cut for the car) be removed from the remote by carefully disasembling it... or would you need to destroy the remote to get it out?
2. Would the transponder recognition process still work if the Fob portion of a Remote-1 was hanging next to the ignition switch, or does the transponder have to be in perfet orientation in a perpendicular plane with the switch to get it recognized?
