seriously. not just in name only. I've gone through this on the 9-5bb recently...
I have a 2004 9-5 with the thick shaft ("remote key 2")... I want a thin key I can immerse regularly in salt water... at this point in time, it seems impossible to get a low profile electronics-free key to open the door.
The difference is you are pre-2004. For about $30 at your local locksmith, they can cut you a transponderless thin key from an Ilco blank. That's what I would do. No such luck 2004+...
To answer your questions directly: the shaft of the remote1/2 factory key is permanently embedded in the plastic handle. You have to destroy it to separate it.
wrt the transceiver, Larry West commented recently on the 9-5 bb that he had an extra set of guts programmed to his car without a shaft, so maybe he will comment further re just how close is necessary... I have yet to test this, but I plan to, as I now have 3 programmed keys + will likely separate guts + shaft on one of them...
I wish they had a simple blank for 2004+!!
James...
