1: You can, as stated, remove the "guts" from the key, and have a huge "skeleton" of a key that will ONLY lock & unlock the doors and trunk.
2: Yes, but, now you are carrying around a set of "guts" with no protection.
The alternative "Banana remote" ONLY has the remote lock functions, not the transponder function. (early 9-5s & 9-3s did not have remote locks as standard equipment in all markets. No remote locks, no "banana". All 9-5s & 9-3s require a transponder to start the car, but not all - none, actually - require remote locking)
There is no way to get a key for an OG 9-5 or OG 9-3 that will start the car that is a nice, flat "wallet" key. There must be a transponder near the ignition switch that is recognized by that car's TWICE module. In the Saab keys, the transponder is either in the "key head" for the Transponder keys, or inside the "guts" of the Remote keys. Your best bet for a weather-resistant key that will start he car without the remote is buying the parts for a Transponder Key 2 (key shaft cut for the car, and a new head). That key will get you in & out of the car AND start it, once programmed. That will work with all 9-3s, and 9-5s up through chassis # 33026906. Later 9-5s are stuck with the remote key.
The closest you could come would be (again, only with an OG 9-3 or 9-5 up to # 33026906) to have a flat key for a 9000 or NG900 cut to your key code. That will lock & unlock the car, but cannot start it, since it does not have the transponder. You would have to hide away a key with a transponder in the car someplace to then start the car.
