I’ve noticed over the years that once the hubs and edges start to rust the rust starts to creep into the brake pad contact area. This reduces the braking force and accelerates wear of the pads in the rusted area. Turning the rotors makes no sense at this point, if it ever does on Saab rotors. I’ve thought about putting some zinc paint on the coated areas when I start to see rust to try to extend the life of the rotors. It’s not that rotors are that terribly expensive, especially if you replace them yourself, but it seems such a waste to replace them every few years. The calipers on a couple of my old 9-5s also look frightful with rust but seem to function just fine. I do give them a thorough wire brushing on the sliding surfaces when I change the pads. Our friends in California and other salt-free areas must be shaking their heads to hear these stories.
