The US fuels have not seen the sulfur reduction that has occured in other markets. The sulfur levels cause increased soot. Much of the soot gets processed in the cat converter once it gets hot. But that is an efficiency loss. The elevated soot also gets into the lub oil which is not good.
Higher cetane increases the ability of the fuel to ignite. Lower cetane causes delayed combustion, noise, reduced fuel efficiency and elevated NOX. This results in smoother power and increased fuel efficiency, and a quieter engine too. Interestingly, biodiesel has a very high cetane level. Note that biodiesel is not raw veggy oil. It must be chemically altered. Some folks actually make their own biodesiel. Old frier oil can be processed as well and would make good sense as this stuff is a mess to dispose of otherwise.
If you are interested in desiel fuel and engine lub issues, see the forums at tdiclub. See the link.
