#1 diesel is not a good fuel in many vehicles as it has insuficient lubricity for the high pressure fuel pumps. Ditto for jet fuels.
#2 heating oil is generally much higher in sulfer that #2 on-road diesel.
#2 off road diesel can be high sulfer.
#2 on road diesel has a controlled sulfur content maximum. It has lubricity, anti foaming and cetane additives. In cooler seasons and in mountian areas the fuel will contain anti gelling agents and water dispersants.
Any one selling #2 heating oil as a motor fuel would be also setting them selves up for heafty fines, plus taxation fines as well.
