with wife and three kids aged 6,8, and 12. We all loved the experience, but I would echo what others say about the differences. I could add the following:
Europeans have a much stronger sense of community than we do. They are very active politically and aware of local issues. They also walk alot more than we do. In England especially they walk for pleasure in the mountains and go to a pub after, which I really enjoyed with my "mates" from work. The work scene itself is more civilized - VERY UNUSUAL for someone to yell at someone or publicly berate them. They also have an amazing sense of humor (probably much more so than the Swedes, who are not known for that quality). The women are thinner and prettier. The men are thinner and uglier.
No matter where in Europe you might go, you would be crazy not to. So few Americans realize there is a world outside the USA, you would really distinguish yourself by the experience. If you don't like it you can always come back.
It will be VERY DIFFICULT to get a work permit. I got one because my wife is Italian, so I could automatically work anywhere in Europe I want to. Other Americans in our office had horror stories about getting and keeping their work permit. Persistence and good legal counsel pays here. A company has to want you badly to go to the effort. For a young recent grad such as yourself it might be easier to get a European lady to fall in love with you - worked for me!
