you would be in high demand (certainly in UK). I've just graduated with a maths degree, and (good) engineers/scientists/mathematicians are in short supply - Mech/Civil/Electrical engineers especially - most of the multinationals are recruiting (as well as small firms). Also, as an engineer you could teach maths - maybe you not thought about it, (do you know career path you want?) but maths teachers are like gold dust in Europe (especially UK/Ireland), I understand mainland Europe too(tho' don't quote me) .
As for living costs - it is expensive, but the North of UK is a LOT cheaper than South - similar wages, but cheaper rent/beer/cars.
If you want any more info on the companies recruiting, i'll email you some contact details? Graduate engineers (with multin nationals start on ~£18k/$28k - give or take) Not sure how that compares with US.
Any questions feel free to email.
How do Europeans view americans? I think us Brits like you more than other europeans (although tourist parts like you 'cos you tip well!), us Brits tend to be rather reserved, which may be a culture shock to you! But if you come oop North we are a lot friendlier than the South of UK.
I'm dribbling now, time to go back to the beers..........
Cheers
Paul
