an interesting article, so lengthy that I feel I don't need to read the book. Enlightening in some aspects, boring in others. One problem that I had was he kept referring to SUVs as "public nuisances" and that they should be "banned". By whom? Oh, right, the government. Sorry bud, but as stupid as those vehicles are, it IS the right of anyone in this country who has the money to go and buy one. The thought of any citizen being prevented from buying a vehicle because the "government" or maniacal safety experts deem it to be "bad" is chilling. I couldn't repress the smirk when the columnist notes that the book should be on the shelf next to Naders "Unsafe at Any Speed". I wasn't surprised though. Oh, I almost forgot, what about that racist/elitist comment on how "immigrants, the lower middle class, and the poor, who generally speed, run lights, drive drunk, and crash more often than the prosperous classes" will be soon buying used SUVs and that things will get worse, not better.
True, SUVs or FUVs whatever, aren't the safest vehicles, get terrible mileage, use tires like crazy, waste resources, etc etc (I should know, I used to drive an Isuzu Rodeo then 'graduated' to an Expedition). I finally got rid of the Ford because of the guilt of driving such a huge machine, mostly by myself to work each day. I actually had to search out areas where I could engage the 4WD to keep the vacuum lines and such from dry rotting (a fact most SUV drivers, if they even have 4WD, don't realize...they might actually some day need that 4WD, flip the switch, and...nothing, rotted out hose). But, just because I finally saw the light and switched (to a Saab no less) doesn't give me the right to preach or dictate to others what they should do. Sure, legislate the breaks that these SUVs get, fine, let them compete on level ground with all the other cars, then we'll see what happens...but I get rather tired of the preaching.
