I read both articles, and was thankful that the writers took the time to put together their efforts. The articles were filled with data, but not very well written - or organized. What emerges is a somewhat foggy - but basic idea that oil selection is a choice among priorities on a list of possible agenda items... lubrication at start-up, protection against wear under high load conditions, pollution impacts on short and long term time scales, fuel mileage and engine longevity. Among the quality oils from which we can select - it seems that we can not make a bad choice -- only marginally better choices according to our priorities. I use Mobil1 0W-40 until summer - then 15W-50 for the summer blitz - changed at 5000 mile intervals - recycled at our local transfer station, including the filters.
I used Redline lubricants in my BMW and Audi - but the cost is brutal. Most of my driving is relatively benign highway cruising. I leave my house at 5am and once I hit the highway the car goes over 50 miles without a gear change...although maybe 75mph in 1st gear is a little fast :-)
Oh Dear, the angst about oil continues
