Uhm, no one is suggesting that the change interval with synthetic oil isn't longer than it is with conventional oil. The issue of change interval isn't even part of the NINES oil article, except when it came to my personal belief.
Saab recommends 10,000 miles under ideal conditions for oil meeting its specification: ACEA A3/B3 - that means at least semi-synthetic oil. Saab recommends halving that if the car is driven under "severe conditions" - that means short trips, frequent idling (like in traffic jams), towing, etc. As an aside, the Company considers any car in the "tri-state" area (NY, NJ, PA) is operating under extreme conditions.
I believe 6000 miles/once per year with fully synthetic oil is sufficiently conservative to protect a Saab engine under any operating condition. (Of course, 6000 miles becomes 5000 when Saab is paying for a change every 10,000) The purpose of a recommendation like this is "do no harm." I know it's probably conservative for most people, way conservative for many people. You know how you drive. Adjust accordingly.
