But the only role is what order you do the wheels. LF - RR - RF - LR for 9³ (for '01 anyway). I suppose it depends on how the plumbing is connected. The idea is which corner is more or less likely for bubbles to get into which other circuit.
Releasing pressure from the ABS accumulator is important when you are removing/replacing that component. Not needed when you change a caliper.
I'd be ready with the new caliper, so you can unscrew the tubing then put it right onto the new caliper without draining the MC & drawing in air. Then flush/bleed your brakes like usual.
