The 1989 944 saw many improvements over previous years due to a new vision at Porsche wanting to take back market share from Nissan, Mazda and the like in the entry level sports car category.
While the fuel injections is still ticks pretty loudly, especially compared to todays cars. The new 2.7 liter engine is very smooth at lower rpms. However when I shift it up above 4000 rpms the engine really comes to life and is fun to drive.
As far as the shifting. The factory shipped these with 10-40W oil in the bear boxes. Many folks neglected to have that changed out after the break in period.
I know my 944 had not been done. I simply drained the gear oil and replaced it with the recommended 90W and the shifter has been firm and smooth ever since.
The 50-50 weight ratio really make it handle amazing.
My complaints about this car have been reduced to dash board cracks, and the sensitive sunroof gears. Other than that it has been fun to tinker on and more fun to drive.
