That was all brilliantly put, especially the part about budgeting. Spending to the ends of your current means put you DIRECTLY in The Cycle - you now own a car you cannot afford to maintain, and one which will require expensive maintenance. Any used-car shopper - but especially one shopping private party (no warranty), 1980s, European cars - needs to set aside a good $1200-$1500 at minimum to instantly put into the car. You're gonna need new belts, a water pump, fix a couple leaks, replace the tires, put new brakes on, and do all that other "deferred maintenance" that will keep the car happy. NOTHING feels better than driving a car away from a trusted mechanic $1500 lighter in a car ready to do some serious, hassle-free mileage.
