I just read this on a Jaguar board. Yes, all of this talk about Jags has sparked my neurosis and I'm considering buying an XK8, but, this aside, in the 3.2 and 4.0 litre engines before 2000, Jaguar employed the use of Nikasil to prevent the wear of aluminum cylindar walls. As has now become apparent, Nikasil deteriorates in the presence of Sulfer. So, low quality fuel, combined with sort trips causes the Nikasil to break down and, eventually, the compression drops causing serious preformance and function problems. The only way to fix the problem is to replace the block and, usually, the pistons. So, 3.2 and 4.0 litre Jaguar engines made prior to 2000 are to be avoided. Cars with the affected engines will have a 6-digit figure at the end of the VIN, whereas cars with steel liners will have a 5-digit figure at the end of the VIN, preceeded by a letter (F or G for the XJ, and A for the XK).

So, if anyone else has Jag-lust, this is something good to look for. I wonder if it was a problem with Nikasil that lead to the failure of many early Porsche M96 (996 and Boster) engines and pre-1996 BMW V8 engines??

Anyway, FYI. Thanks to Jag-lovers dot org for this information.
