Pretend our four cylinder engines are actually a four storey building. On each floor is a fireplace (the cylinder). They are all tied into the same chimney (the exhaust). The fireplace on the first floor will have the longest flue and if properly sized will draw the most air into the firebox as the hot air is drawn up to the lower atmospheric pressure of the outside cooler air at great speed creating a vacuum. The fireplace on the fourth floor will not draw as well because of the shorter flue. If all the flues were the same length they would all draw the same. If the chimney stack
were shortened all the fires would be negatively impacted.
Also If there is a condition inside the building where the atmospheric temperature or pressure are equal to the outside of the building the chimney won't draw at all. The burn is insufficient to create convection. Open the door to the outside (open the intake particularly to cooler air)and suddenly you have a properly drafting flue and a nice little fire.
Any HVAC guy knows how to size a flue properly, both length and diameter, for the most efficient burn. I wish it were that simple to calculate the same for an exhaust system on a car.
