drilling removes as much heat-removal exchange area as it adds, and also removes some heat capacity in the disc, as well as pad to rotor heat transfer area.
I'm sure it felt/stopped better, but for other reasons than heat removal by drilling. Some other issue was improved. No one I run with at the track uses drilled rotors, and we brake extremely hard. Reputable race-brake shops (KVR, BAER, etc) will never claim drilling removes any significant heat. I am going with slotted rotors, to skim off the brake pad and prevent ugly pad surfaces after continued extreme use.
drilled rotors are used in race cars for high speed ovals, etc, where hard braking seldom occurs, and unsprung weight reduction is desired.
