You'll notice the vast majority of people having negative comments about the v6 have never driven one, much less owned one.
I happen to own both a 95SE v6 and a 01 95 base wagon. The v6 and the 2.3l turbo are different engines with different strengths and weaknesses. For the type of driving I do (mostly around town), I'll take the v6 over the turbo every time- much better low-end torque.
As for reliability, my v6, aside from the scheduled maintenance, has never been in the shop. I have been religious about maintenance and the car has rewarded me with flawless performance.
The primary weakness of the v6 is the timing belt which must be changed every 30,000 miles. So what. If the maintenance is performed as scheduled chances are remote that you will have a problem. You will see tales of woe on the NG board about timing belts that have snapped causing $4,000 - $5,000 worth of damage to the engine, but the common thread in most of these is poor or unknown maintenance history. I've yet to see a case where someone performed all the proper maintenance and still had a failure. I'm not saying it hasn't happened, it's just rare.
All of the negativity you'll see around here falls into one of three catagories: second hand information (my aunt's cousin's milkman had a v6 and he hated it) poor sources (my mechanic sez v6s are junk), and the outright juvenile (GM sux, this engine isn't a true Saab). No one, to my knowledge, has ever posted any hard data supporting the notion that the v6 fails a greater rate than the turbo.
To say the v6 is a great engine may be foolish. To say that it's junk is downright idiocy.
