Flame speed is a measure for how fast a flame propagates into a premixed mixture of fuel and oxidant. The flames generated in injected IC engines, in general, are not premixed flames. In fact, the spray of fuel emanating from the injector vaporises into a gaseous jet which will burn as such. (Maybe too)simply put, this jet will essentially burn at it's edges. The actual mixing zone where fuel and oxidant are mixed is this (again maybe too simply put) are of the order of less than a mm thick. With fluid dynamic strain (i.e. turbulence), this thickness is even less. For such a fundamentaly differnt flame from a premixed flame, no actual flamespeed can be assigned, nor measured. The rate of fuel consumption is the appropriate measure for combustion rate for this flame....And, by the way, these flames ALWAYS burn in stochiometric conditions irrespective whether there is overall more fuel or more oxidant than stochiometric....So locally always high (stochiometric) temps are achieved.
