I too am "putting a car on the track" but saying that is not specific
enough to answer your questions. Here are some more questions:
Is this a race car? That means competition prepared and never street
driven. That means strip the interior and put in a roll cage. Which class
would you target? Saabs are classified in a few different classes - some
models therefore have a "rules" advantage; others don't. Overall, if you
want to race and be competitive, you wouldn't choose a Saab at all!
Most likely this car will be only a recreational track car for lapping days,
practice days, driving schools, etc. If so, how much time will it be driven
on the street? 20%, 50%, 100% as your daily driver?
For example, my SPG will be a weekends-only fun car, and recreational
track car. I am keeping the interior, power windows and sunroof for now,
but I stripped out most other systems (cruise control, a/c, etc.). Last year I
bought an off-lease newgen 900 for the daily driver.
So that was my decision - the c900 platform. So far my experience w/ the
newgen is that it needs some serious $$$ suspension tuning to make it work
as well as a c900 w/ only springs and an alignment.
My '98 900 has 17 wheels and sticky tires, abbott springs, abbott susp
bushings, and still the SPG will run circles around it. Even if I add the
rest of the Viggen Rescue Kit to the '98, I don't think that will really
cure it - and I'm still at the wimpy 185 hp stock level! More newgen flaws
include horrible stock brakes for track use, seats with no lateral support,
and almost no alignment adjustment (front toe only)! Makes a great daily
driver though!
The downsides of a c900 have been noted. On a road track, the biggest one
(transmission reliability) is not so much of a problem, as opposed to off-road
rally and drag racing, which can take it out real fast. And it goes without
saying that you have to use the ‘88+ brakes and axles – they are vastly better
than the -’87 stuff.
I guess I'd go with the boosted c900 or 9000 2.3 Turbo. It's just more fun
when your car has some "go power" and there is still some money in your
pocket too. Good luck!
