Jak,
The 1985 powerplant is unique and there is much that can be improved to increase BHP/Torque.
We have done much work with intercooler options on the 900 and find the FMIC to be the best case, if possible but will be complicated to employ and requires removal of AC condens.
The 1985 intercoolers are fairly restrictive and, although the aluminum construction has heat dis. qualities, the lower end cap of the SAAB aluminum IC use a one way gate which reduces flow capabilities. A simple update to the later era 1987+ IC will improve flow dynamics of up to 9%.
We had a drop-in IC upgrade at the SOC which improves flow of up to 23% and reduced charge temperatures by over 25% by using the Bell Engineering core. The FMIC from the 1991 9000 should be a competent upgrade over the 1985 900 IC.
The 1987 and up intake camshaft may also be used in conjunction with the 1985 cylinder head for another upgrade over the factory asymetrical intake camshaft. The combination will bring more air volume per boost psi and may add 5-6 BHP but eliminates swirl through the use of the 1987+ symetrical intake camshaft and may reduce low end torque while increasing mid range/top end torque. Retain the 1985 exhaust camshaft.
We have found that use of the external wastegate may not provide substantial BHP provision per $ and keeping the integrated wastegate may be a better alternative.
The .63 turbine A/R will greatly reduce turbocharger response and are typically used by applications in excess of 6K engine RPM. The .48 will allow for up to 350 BHP and will improve low end spool/turbo response.
Good luck and regards!
