I understand that cutting the body panels surely isn't the way to go for everybody. Personally I was willing to make a slight compromise to ensure that the cold air supply is sufficient. The little grille does tell a tale about whats under the bonnet but I still think its not excessive considering the otherwise mild visual mods.

I was a little concerned about the possible problems with water entering the engine. So far there hasn't been a slightest evidence of such. If you look closely at the photos (I know they aren't perfect, will take new ones soon) you'll see that the cone filter is located rather in front of the opening than directly in the air flow from the grille. This is not exactly optimal for the air flow but on the other hand it efficiently prevents the moisture from reaching the filter fibers. The top of the filter, directly facing the grille, is made of plastics.

Because of the quite small openings (between the hood/body and at the bottom of the fender well) through which the extra air escapes from the fender, there's a slight overpressure in there. That's why the air flow through the fender isn't very high. This correlates for the water and dirt flying in the air, as well... I was a bit concerned about the dirt flying to the back of the wheel well (where the fuse box is) but it has not been a problem.

I have regularly checked the filter after driving in heavy rain. It has never been soaking wet. The moisture sucked through to the engine will probably only help it to get rid of the carbon deposits :)

In the wintertime there's tons of salt on our roads and I've usually cleaned the filter a bit more often than usual since there's been traces of junk on it. Nothing serious, though.

I must say that I've never tested the setup in DEEP water. We really don't see puddles deep enough to cause any harm here in Finland.

One of the most important reasons for me to scrap the air box was my intercooler fan setup: it is also visible in the photos, though not very clearly. I've mounted a radiator cooling fan from a Fiat 127 behind the factory IC. Triggered on by a throttle position switch, it is pulling air through the core. There's a substantial increase in boost tolerance with the fan switched on in the summertime, but I haven't had a chance to measure the temp drops yet.

Oh well, the disclaimer: this has worked well for me but your mileage may wary...
