1. The issue of sidewall depends on the type of tire your going to use. If you have true drag tires (like wrinkle walls) you are going want to run very low psi to get the best grip out of them. I'm not sure is the same is true for a drag radial. With a street designed drag tire there will be a much stiffer sidewall, so lower psi will only matter so much, basically the tire is meant to work at a set psi range, taking a few lbs out will help a bit, but its limited compared to a true drag tire.
I would avoid 17's just in terms of rotational mass, 17's typically weigh more than a 15 of the same design and locate most of their mass farther away from the rotational center. I have run 225/50r15's on my old 9000 and was very happy with there overall performance. I don't think I would have gained anything by going to a 17, some would complain of sidewall flex, but the s0-3's had a stiff sidewall and had more then enough grip to hang on auto corssing and could launch quite well.
I don't think you would be crazy to go with a competition tire on the front and all season on the rear, plenty of fwd will run larger fronts than rear and this will certainly work to increase front traction well above rear. I would be concerned about running this on the street though as the rears may have different handling characteristics in certain conditions than the fronts (rain/dirt/mud). I would also be worried about snap oversteer, generally auto-x tossability can be spooky on the street. As far as the large sway goes, depends where your at once you swapped the tires.
What car are you running and how's your alignemnt?
