FYI Doyle and mike d. When the Sonett was new its frame was very strong and was based on the Bull-nosed Saab 96 frame. The floor (wheel base) was shortened and an overlaped seam was created. Although the bottom (outer) surfaces of the frame were well protected with red oxide primer and black under coating the inside surfaces were unfortunately not. This is were the problems began. Over time the acidic fumes from the battery rotted out metal in the trunk, moisture in the passenger compartment from leaks etc. slowly damaged the floor and worked its way into the rocker panels causing them to rot from the inside out. As I said the frame was very strong when new and much of this strength was due to its design which utilizes an "H" shaped structural sheet metal component. The inner and outer rocker panels together form two beams. They are the longer legs of the "H" and connect the front sub-frame with the rear axle tunnel. I caution anyone thinking of making repairs to their Sonett frame. Pop riveted aluminum flashing, fiber glass and bondo are not the way to go to restore the strength and ultimately the safty factor in the frame. Remember the rockers rot from the inside out so if there is a little rust or bubbling showing there is alot more damage and strength loss than you might think. Good Luck with your repairs!
