I'm sure Doyle's job is very strong in bending strength, especially if he used thicker-than-stock aluminum on the rockers (aluminum isn't as stiff as steel, but extra thickness would make up for that.)
If it were my car, what I'd be worried about would be that if I hit something*, even at low speed, the rivets might shear or pull out, and then there goes the entire strength of the structure. I'd say that with almost 50 years' experience, Doyle qualifies as an expert... but if you're NOT quite that much of an expert, you're probably safer relying on recreating the car's original engineering by reproducing the original steel pieces, rather than trying to engineer your own solution out of aluminum and fiberglass.
Of course it's all a matter of what you're comfortable with, but another thing to keep in mind is that a car that's been repaired with correctly fabricated steel panels will be worth a lot more if you ever decide to sell it.
*Don't go thinking, "Oh, you're dead if you hit something in a Sonett anyway" -- they were pretty tough little buggers, and designed for controlled crush. At sometime in its past, mine got hit hard enough in the front to push the engine mounts sideways by about two inches, which must have been quite a whack. But that section was designed to deform up to a point on impacts, so it absorbed all the distortion; the spring-tower area right behind it was still perfectly straight, so the car's suspension alignment and tracking weren't affected. All I had to do was straighten the engine-mount outriggers to true it up.
