2.8 engine swap... don't try to mix years. Posted by Chadwick [Email] (#569) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Chadwick) on Thu, 23 Jan 2014 18:46:33 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Tried to be clever and put an 06' 2.8 in to a '08. Won't make that mistake again.
Customers old engine blew due to neglect (think, one big hunk of sludge under the valve cover), so we R'R'd with used. 8hrs to get the old one out, swap components, install used in to car. After installing realize one connector for the SAI pressure sensor is missing off the 06's wiring harness and the entire harness needs changed. Looked at them side by side on the ground and didn't notice it. Oh well.
Have to remove engine to access everything. Back out she comes. Pull the alternator back off. Biggest pain is a knock sensor right behind the transfer case that is covered by a heat shield and the downpipe. Have to remove downpipe and all associated heat shields/brackets for the one connector. Nearly all accessories have to be removed to get at everything. Re-install and get everything back together. 25 man hours deep in to this engine swap and finally got the car running. Then we find out the engine has a few different internal differences than the year of the vehicle it will go in so it throws a CEL and the cam sensors drop off the bus and it will not restart. Great, we can swap the camshafts and sensors... but that requires another 6-8hr engine removal and another 6-8hrs install. Who knows if they would even get a long with the 08 ECM.
Going to try a few more things before I bite the bullet and grab a later engine. Going to be a good test of how long I can still stand to chase my tail.
