Don't give up, you just need to decide how much time and effort you want to put into it.
First keep the buffing machines away unless nothing else works. Several things to try are 3m imperial hand glaze, 3m swirl remover for dark cars, and a product that i believe is called liquid ebony. follow up the polish step with the glaze then a good carnauba wax, like zymol, malms or griots. make sure what you use is non abrasive and apply in a straightline not a circle. If that doesn't work start with 3ms least abrasive compound and work you way up.
I share your pain, i have a dark blue 9-5 and have been able to be swirl free for its first few months. it looks great clean but what a pain!!
