First of all, I don't know a lot about cars, but want to be sure I'm not getting ripped off. . .
Own a '97 9000 CS, bought used from a non-Saab dealer who "specializes" in Saabs.
Two weeks ago, when starting car, the interior lights were dim until I backed out of driveway and started driving. After a few days of this, the car wouldn't start at all. Called AAA for tow or jump. The mechanic jumped battery, but it stalled after a few minutes. The mechanic believed that it could be alternator. Brought the car to a non-Saab repair shop and had the battery replaced. They ALSO thought it was alternator and suggested bringing it to a Saab dealership for confirmation and computer hook-up. Brought the car to place where car was purchased, they said alternator was fine. One week later, while driving the "check engine" light came on. Checked gas cap. . .it was secure. Brought it again to place of purchase, they hooked it up to computer and said all was fine. They reset the light. Sure enough, two days later, "check engine" light is on again. Called place of purchase and they said it was "probably the cam shaft." In the interim, talked to a 'car enthusiast' who claimed that he's never heard of anyone needing a new cam shaft and that this is quite expensive. Now I don't trust the place from which we bought the Saab, but the local Saab dealership is quite friendly with this place. Any ideas? I'm thinking of driving it to a Saab dealer much father away (w/out any ties to the place of purchase) for a second opinion. Has anyone had to replace their cam shaft? Would the "check engine" light have anything to do with the battery replacement/alternator problems? Am I right to distrust these guys?
