What's wrong with the guages?

I think the gauges are fine. They are simple, yes-but well lit and easy to read at a glance-night or day.
The alternative would be something like the snazzy looking but busy, difficult to decipher gauges of the IS300, for example. One could hop from one Lexus to another and the layouts are different-there is no continuity within the brand itself. So let's say I had a LS430 (I don't) and hopped into an IS300-it'd take awhile to get accustomed to the location/interpretation of the gauges.
Not so in the a SAAB-any SAAB for that matter for the last 22 years. The consistency of the SAAB layout since the C900 as far as the tach, speedo, and fuel/turbo/temp gauges go brings a familiarity and continuity from the C900 to NG900/9-3 to the 9-5. It's like a connection to the marque's history-as much so as the key in the console.
Gauges should be simple. Because you need to figure out vital functions instantly. It's not rocket science (which seems to be required knowledge for the IS300s chronometer styled gauges).
Sure, one could argue that they could have dressed the gauges up a little. But why mess with perfection?
