David: I am one of the manual bashers you spoke of, so I will explain my reasoning here. The Saab manual is quite sloppy as manual shifters go, and going into and out of fifth is fairly clumsy.Fast 5 to 4 downshifts are often difficult, and when you go from 4th to 5th, you often have to finess the lever through an exagerated H pattern to get it to go in. That said,I also feel that the dead spot at low rpm in second gear is also a problem, and the charecteristics of the engines power response are far better suited to an automatic. By the way,I am a 35 year stick shift driver who is switching to an auto this time, and can no longer rationalize the effort involved in manual shifting in any case, unless it is with the new style electro-hydraulic systems available in very limited supply right now, but being develped by all of the leading manufacturers of manual gearboxes. See December Automobile magazine for a description of the system available in the new M-3. This is where manual shifting is going, and Saab has it in the 9-3X.
