As a long-time manual driver & enthusiast, one of the reasons I looked at the Aero vs competitors is the option of a manual. Yes, it's certainly not the best linkage and feel, but is not nearly as bad as you make it to be - I don't miss shifts, or worry about the 4-5 or 5-4 shift - no big deal at all. You just can't hurry the shifts. (I also have a miata, so I am used to superlative shift feel)
Faults and all, I still much prefer it to the auto - after reading all the praise for the auto on this board, I don't share that view. I had a loaner yesterday, an '01 Aero auto, and found it like any auto - boring and uninvolving to drive, although it's much more responsive than most normally-aspirated cars.
When I picked up my manual Aero later, I was immediatly struck at how much I preferred the control and feel of the manual - no comparison for me - much more fun! I encourage other enthusiast drivers to give the manual a chance. Yes power drops off on the 1-2 shift - so what - you learn to live with the powerband of the car. Once you get past the low-rev lag, the responsiveness is far better than the auto.
