Lou - I do it all the time - I normally use the fob to lock, and frequently use the key to unlock. I just went out and did it several times / several ways just to make sure I'm not nuts, and it worked fine. Lock the door with the remote, I turn the key in the lock to unlock and the interior lights come on, I pull the handle and the door opens, no screaming. Works just fine. Also, I can lock the car with the remote, then use the key to unlock the wagon's trunk or vice-versa. No problem. You're welcome to come try it yourself.
Also, I have both style keys - the 98/99/00 unintegrated and the '01 integrated, and they work interchangeably with the remote too. I never get an alarm when I unlock my car, no matter how I locked the car or what Saab provided item I use to unlock it.
Some other inaccurate info your source gave you: In the old style key the transponder for the ignition lock is NOT in the fob, but is in the base of the key - it is actually sold as a seperate part number, and it clips together with the key head. This is obviously true because you can start and drive the car with the old style key even though you don't have the fob with you. I know this because I have an old style key but I never bought the fob, and the key works fine.
