Thanks, gents. I was afraid of precisely your suggestion of timing cover. If it IS the timing cover gasket, and the seller won't make good on it, I'll probably ditch this car and avoid Saabs henceforward. Reading all these oil leak and pulley posts on cars with mileage like mine is really disturbing. What ever happened to the Saabs of old that were virtually bulletproof? My old 89 900 was outstanding. Was it GM's doing? This car leaks more than my 256K mile Mercedes diesel!
Anyway, we'll see what transpires. And to answer, no, I am not aware of any pulley or belt work before we bought the car, but that's not saying much. Carfax showed maintenance done at 46K or so, so maybe I'll try to call Saab customer service and see if they can tell me what work was done.
