John,
I agree with you. It just seems that there are many people that poo-poo beam type torque wrenches. Perhaps it is because they are cheap wrenches and people feel better when they spend more money...
Personally I own five torque wrenches. Two small (inch pound) for light fasteners. Tranny work etc. Both are 3/8" drive. One is a click type the other is a snap on dial indicator. I also own two beam type 1/2" drive, and one 1/2" drive click type torque wrenches. I use the latter for head bolts and other torque sensitive large bolts. (I got the beam ones at a closeout store for ~5$ each.)
Do you know which one I use the most? The cheap beam type one. I use it primarily for lugs, but have used it for other jobs. Like you said, if you look at it square and account for the zero torque reading you can get pretty decent results. Another problem with the beam type is the low resolution of the scale. Ten foot pounds is not a very large distance on most of their scales and it may be difficult to read the torque for that reason.
Beams are not as precise as the click type. They can't be because of the low resolution scale and error induced when reading at an angle.
Nonetheless for wheels a cheapo beam will get you close enough if you know how to read it.
