9-5 less safe than competitors?

The 9-5 (and SAAB's in general) is touted as one of the safer vehicles. The extra safety that it would afford my family is one of the reasons that I'm trying to justify the expense of new Aero. Granted, the test drive was very impressive, but I can't buy car based soley on what my heart says.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has 40-mph offset frontal crash data for many vehicles, and the 1998-2001 (they haven't tested with it's chasis changes) 9-5 only attains an Aceptable rating, while 5 competitors are rated good, while the C Class, S80, and 3-series all receive Best Picks.
This is only ones test. In another section on website, they list Injury, Collision, and Theft losses for several hundered vehicles, and the 1998-2001 9-5 places in top third for luxury cars, but certainly isn't the class leader.
Can someone point me in direction of other sources of injury claims or crash test data to justify SAAB's apparent tag of being one of the safest cars on the road.
