timing chain tensioner failure (car totaled?)

My car (2000 Aero) recently began making an awful noise when driving in the heat. Took it to a local saab mechanic and ne diagnosed the problem as the timing chain tensioner. I can confirm that the timing chain is extremely loose. I have pretty good confidence in the mechanics, but...
He is quoting $3000+ to fix the vehicle, it has 137,000 miles on it. However, he said that its one of the cleanest engines for a car of this age he has seen. But, this is almost the value of the car.
I'm pretty conflicted. Has anyone else seen this type of failure? Any ideas? Is this a reasonable quote to replace the timing chain and tensioner? I think I might just walk away from the vehicle, even though it was recently purchased and I'm going to lose a lot of money.
Thanks,
Trevor
