Do you know if SAAB used so called "smart" alternators? Is the AL0813X such an alternator?
I had the alternator installed today. It's the AL0813X. We check the system voltage while driving and it's again 13 to 13.3 VDC. This is just the same as before all this trouble started. We found the past alternator (AL0857X) had been put in correctly but some of the bolts were loose. It's unlikely that was contributing to this issue. If the alternator is "smart" it will only call for current when the battery is low. Supposedly it's the ECU that determines this. Does SAAB do this with their cars? Was a running change made between the '03 and '04 model years?
My son has an '03 Aero that was built in September of '02. I drive that car and the voltage is 14.3 - 14.4 all the time. What would cause the cars to be so different?? The electrical systems seem identical to me.
I have checked for parasitic current draw when the car is parked and I find there is none.
I get the '04 Aero Combi back tomorrow. I'll take the battery over to where I bought it and have it checked. I'll also check current draw while idling and under load and report back.
