Here in the NYC metro area, last August of 2002, a 5MT Aero sedan with touring package and metallic paint was selling for $33k (cash or traditional financing) or $35k for a lease.

There are many happy Arc owners on the board, and the DI seems to be less of an issue on the V6. (This might simply be due to a smaller sample size though) The V6 has a smoother idle. But with the V6 you'll have to change the timing belt probably 2-3 times over 150k miles.

The Aero 4 cyl uses a timing chain which will probably never need attention over than mileage.

The Aero puts out more power and torque while using less fuel.

The Aero has some goodies that the Arc doesn't, like sports suspension, 17" wheels, bigger brakes, etc. These make for a slightly firmer ride, but not uncomfortably so. You get better handling and braking. The Aero is probably less nose-heavy too.

What's your transmission choice? The 5AT is excellent, but SAAB's 5MT has seen major improvements over the years and shifting a manual SAAB has never been better!

If you really want wood on the dash, I'm sure your dealer can accommodate you. Bear in mind that many people get used to the "aluminum" Aero dash.

The 9-5 will probably the last model to use the "classic" SAAB 4 cyl engine, which is known for its durability over the long haul... go for the Aero!!
