If you are mostly concerned about dry/wet traction, get as good set of high perf. summer tires. They are worlds ahead of the best all season tire, but SUCK in the snow :o( Then spend $300-500 on a set of old saab rims & dedicated snow tires.
Like you stated, the sidewalls are stiffer as well as a stickier compound is used in the tread. Sure, it does allow you to go much faster then our cars can go, but the biggest improvement is being sticky :o)
