My 87 900S is doing the same thing. The synchro hub is probably worn, which is unrelated to the pinion bearing in the final drive. There are balls and springs which should keep the hub in position, but when they become worn they allow the hub to move back to the neutral position. Try to avoid allowing it to happen, as it will only get worse. If you must use 2nd to deccelerate, hold the gear lever in position. If you learn to live with it, it can last a long time. The only true fix is a tranny rebuild.
