The ball (just one) and spring (just one also) actually hold the shift fork and thereby the synchro sleeve in engagement on the gearwheel and synchonizer cone. What is really happening is that the mainshaft,carrying the gear and the synchro hub (splined to the shaft) are moving away from the fixed fork and sleeve, thus disengaging. Because the ring and pinion are hypoid in design, power tranmission from the pinion to the ring is accompanied by a tremendous thrust to the mainshaft away from the ring gear. As the pinion bearings wear, this thrust is expressed as forward (relative to the chassis) movement. Eventually you have sufficient movement to disrupt engagement during abrupt changes to the power input.
