I have an '87 900S and have really liked the Bridgestone Blizzaks. I prefer the 195/60 15 size, as opposed to the 185/65 15 (narrower), which seems to be popular. Consumer Reports tested the Blizzaks a few years ago and found that the 185's tracked through deep snow better, but usually we find ourselves on either hard-packed snow or slush. One drawback to the Blizzaks is that they wear down to an "all-season" style tread. Why they couldn't continue the winter tread all the way down to the base is beyond me.
I changed to Nokian Hakkapelliita snow tires because of this, and I can't see I really like the Nokians. Everybody speaks well of them, but they just don't have the grip on ice that the Blizzaks have.
One other option is Michelin Arctic Alpin. I've not drive these snow tires on a 900, but my wife has them on her 9000, and they're even better than Blizzaks. They don't have the tread design of wearing down to all-season tread, either. I'd recommend those!
By the way, approximately where in New England are you? I got to know some of the Saab service people in southern Maine back when I lived there.
