I've an '85 900S (8v) and '90 900S (16v); borrowed/tested a few SPG's (turbo's). My opinion:
5-speed. Period.
I'm most fond of the older 8v 900's (pre '86) because the engines are a delight and the grill/bumper's scream "saab". Yes, the 8v has a few less hp and is definitely slower, but it oozes character and is so much fun to learn how to stroke it just right. That is to say, it's a hoot to drive as long as you don't mind being out-accelerated by the occasional minivan. It's also essentially bomb-proof. Did I mention it has has a wonderful solid sound to it? ;o)
The 16v is significantly more zippy and revs lower at highway speed, but somehow it lacks personallity (IMHO). I don't know, I think I just like the attention the 8v demands to make it sing, versus the 16v where you just hit the gas and go. They're super quiet when young, but mine's kinda raspy in old age. Nonetheless, it's a much acclaimed and highly refined engine.
Though the added complexity combined w/ age requires a bit more fussing around (and the allure of adding modifications), the turbo's are a blast. There is no comparison between a turbo american car and a saab turbo. None. Saabs are designed from the ground up to be turbos.
Finally, though some will swear by this or that year because the brakes are different or it has an airbag or ABS or whatever, I'd put that stuff secondary to a)you like the way it drives b)you like the engine/it's condition and c)the trans is good. There are no "bad" years, though some have little quirks. All the rest are issues of character that you'll learn to love. In other words, the newest 900 is already ~7 yr old, so get one you like w/ acceptable mileage regardless of model yr. Oh, and getting maint. records is nice unless you're made of money and patience.
P.S. When test driving: Note that with the exception of swaybars, shocks, and some springs, all 900 suspensions/steering are essentially identical. So if you really like one but it feels mushy or steers light compared to another 900, it's probably easily remedied (bj, tie end, shocks...) and you can get the feel you want. Good luck!
