Hi David,
Although Im not an expert, I was going through about three weeks ago what you are going through now. Yep, 900's are amazing cars- and I never thought I'd get attached to a car like I have. I bought a 1990 900S 82K(5spd) and love the thing.
Here's what I'd suggest:
1) Glue yourself to saabnet.com-- everyone has been amazing in giving me help, advice, and support through the process.
2) Buy a 5-speed.
3) Buy a Bentley manual (if you narrow down to a model year, or borrow one while looking)-- I have not yet bought one, but plan to asap. Apparently they are the best in describing technicalities, and will empower you with the lingo and knowledge to deal with sellers and service providers.
And based on my recent experience with buying a car from a reputible Saab dealer's used division (if you're going private, this may not help) here are some other points:
1) Low ball the heck outta him/her. In the back of your mind, remember you will probably have to put some $ right away into the car to iron out some probs. I bought from a dealer and got just the car I wanted for a really low price (I'm told by Saab enthusiasts who've seen it and checked it out. Christmas eve is a good day to buy!) Be prep'd to walk away, of course you walk the fine line between loosing the car you want and saving $.
2) Push for at least a 30d warranty on the engine and trans if the car is newer than 1990- all others will probably go 'as is'. This helped me get some expensive, neccessary work done on the engine without cost, as well as the ball joints replaced for free (this was a safety issue that the shop actually diagnosed).
Good luck!
D
