87'900 T Conv. - Overheats - Head Gasket?

I've got 146,000 miles on it. I love it... but, it has some problems. #1 - Overheating - Had the thermostat replaced, fan switch lowered so it would kick on sooner because of an overheating problem. Now the Hot guage fluctuates, don't know if it's telling the truth - feels like it still is running hot. I'm not losing (at least not rapidly) antifreeze - I don't see smoke out the tailpipe, it does have a peculiar "hot / oil" smell that is unusual. How will I know if it's the head gasket? On top of that I need new brakes, calipers and rotors all the way around. And to cap it off - my transmission slips and they have told me it's a matter of time.
Any verdicts on if I should repair or look for a new car. (it breaks my heart). I wish I could do these repairs myself, but I can't.
Top - kinda new, but gets terrible wear spots on both sides - little "holes" - and advice from other convertible owners as to how to stop this from happening?
