Natasha, I went through the same exact process you did the other day with the thermostat and switch, and my 87 900 S was still indicating as hot. I noticed my gauge was fluctuating today as well. It turned out to be an incorrect reading, it was easy to fix. Remove the left speaker grill above the gauge cluster, locate the large white elcectronic connector on the right hand side when facing the front. Unplug the connector and spray with some Radio Shack TV tuner cleaner, now reconnect the plug and insure that it's on there good. Replace the speaker grill, make sure you get the defroster duct back in place and screw it shut. Mine indicates normal temperatures now.
