I can't say exactly but some of the things you describe ring a bell with what happens when the ignition key fails to return fully from the Start position to the Run position.
This isn't a good situation - - it can fry a starter pretty quickly.
Other symptoms along with dash light oddities are a ring-tingaling kind of noise from under the hood, and a hot electrical smell from the starter.
Sometimes an episode of this doesn't ruin a starter, sometimes once is all it takes.
If it is a sticky ignition cylinder, the answer is, make sure key pops back from turned all the way at startup. And get its action fixed - - sticky goo and other things get down into the key works over the years and can be rinsed out, either by you with hot water judiciously applied, followed by blowing things out with air, or by an indy or you if very clever, who will remove the key cylinder and boil it in water for a while to degunk it. And lubing the linkage between key and key switch, underneath the shifter assembly.
